So, let's recap the past week and I'll explain. But before I do, here's a quick shout out to the best parents in the world for handing me anything and everything I've ever wanted in life, including this once in a lifetime experience! I am beyond blessed. Much love to the fam back home.
Back to the beginning. Day 1 was terrifying. Bad vibes were everywhere. In summary, my bags were too large to move by my lonesome. My cardigan is lost forever because forgetful me was so distracted by my T-rex luggage that I left it behind on the shuttle. Still sad about that incident. After setting up the impossible wi-fi I thought I would lose communication with the rest of the world for four months due to the measly 2,000 minutes of internet usage I'm allotted per week in this bitter cold apartment I call home. To my surprise I was just overreacting – figures. Also, I was suffering from extreme jet lag. Like I hadn't slept for more than four hours in two days jet lag. There's a first for everything, right? I obviously survived and made an attitude adjustment after getting some much needed shut-eye and seeing the sights, which are beautiful by the way.
We had meetings, meetings, and more meetings. These people don't know how to be efficient. A meeting at 9 a.m. then a meeting at 3:30 p.m. I was just thinking at the time... all I want to do is sleep and now I have to hang out in a 4 x 4 lounge you've provided 34+ of us with minuscule amounts of coffee that costs £1. C'mon. I quickly got over this situation.
Anyway, that's how the first three days went basically. Thrown into the mix was a trip to the Natural History Museum, a walking tour of Camden (where we live), and a nice welcome dinner at a pub with a grand view and a helpful bartender named Ralph.
The weekend brought us a fun night out with live music and dancing at KoKo. I totally touched the lead singer's arm! The front row will make you a crazed fan no matter what band is playing, believe me. I got to chat with another band we had previously listened to at Wheelbarrow and one of the guitarists asked me, "Do you know where I can go have a smoke?" I said no. Still a highlight in my book.
The three hour panoramic tour of London was legit! That's when I finally came to my senses and realized where I actually was and that I need a better camera. It also made me realize how much sightseeing I have to fit into such a short time here. Everyone keeps warning us time will fly. I'm not so sure I want it to!
Sunday was a day of free wi-fi at Starbucks, organizing myself and grocery shopping. Side note: baggers do not exist and checkers literally sit in a chair behind the cash register and slide barcodes over the red-lit square. My conclusion is that doing nothing is much more fun in London. Actually, anything is more fun in London. This includes classes and shopping.
In regards to school.... my teacher seems genuinely cool and the workload is nonexistent. Score! And I can now say I've been to one of the largest retail stores here, Topshop aka heaven on earth. Four floors of fashion at x2 the price. Stupid exchange rate *eyerolls* sorry Mom and Dad. Here my necklaces got so tangled by the cashier that it took him a minimum of ten minutes to fix them. It's worth mentioning.
After a short, sweet and informal interview at my internship on Monday I have officially joined the Beauty and the Dirt team. Today was my first day on the job located in the fashion-y district. Two articles down, many more to go! I was researching jeans and nail polish all day, checking my Twitter feed regularly, and browsing sites like Vogue UK. My co-workers are everything I could've hoped for. I have a supervisor who buys me lunch, shows me around the area even in the freezing temperatures, and lets me interview makeup artists and a deputy editor that has gorgeous hair and therefore great beauty advice, in addition to a sweet personality and patience to boot.
Cheers to living in London!
Until next time,
Shelby
